Wireless Network Antennas

Answer
Can I mix high-gain directional and omni-directional antennas on my AP to extend my WLAN & maintain local omnidirectional access?

APs with two antenna ports use antenna diversity, which automatically switches to the antenna with the best signal. If the local and long-distance clients never use the AP at the same time, this setup might work.

But whenever local and long-distance clients are active at the same time, the stronger signal would tend to be selected, possibly locking out one or the other type of connection.

Unless you can carefully match the antenna gains and power levels of local and long-distance clients, you'll be better off using two APs, each equipped with the appropriate antenna type.
