(IRVINE, CA) Hawking Technologies has announced the release of its HomeRemote home control system. The system uses Z-wave wireless technology, which is competing with Zigbee in the wireless control application market.

The HRGZ1 HomeRemote System consists of an internet gateway and handheld remote control for in-home control of lighting and appliances. The system also allows remote control via a standard Internet web browser or mobile phone and features live video monitoring from via HomeRemote Video Cameras (HRNC1).

The product line will begin shipping on March 1st. MSRP for the HomeRemote Gateway plus Remote Control will be $199.99 and $169.99 for the Wireless Video camera.

Hawking Technologies announced today that it has joined the Z-Wave Alliance and plans to use Z-Wave technology in upcoming products. Hawking also said it plans to release a home control product using Z-Wave technology "very soon".

Z-Wave is a proprietary Personal Area Network (PAN) technology developed by Zensys A/S of Denmark. It competes with the Zigbee standard (aka IEEE 802.15.4) for mesh wireless control technology, primarily aimed at home control applications. Z-Wave uses a two-way RF system that operates in the 908MHz band while Zigbee operates in 2.4GHz (global), 915Mhz (Americas) and 868Mhz (Europe) bands.

A wireless networked camera for around $120 may sound like a sweet deal. But Jim Buzbee finds that Hawking's HNC290G is definitely not.

Low-cost hard drive enclosures have extended the useful life of many a spare hard drive by turning them into USB or Firewire-attached external drives. And now similar products are arriving to perform the conversion to Networked Attached Storage (NAS). Jim Buzbee takes a look at two low-cost offerings and finds sometimes you get what you pay for.

Hawking's Broadband Booster promises to solve problems using time-sensitive applications on home and SOHO broadband connections. Tim Higgins finds it works well for what it does, but isn't a cure for all bandwidth-management problems.

Hawking Technology's Hi-Gain Wireless USB adapter puts a new twist on an old product category. We found its 802.11b wireless adapter and hi-gain directional antenna to be a compelling combination for overcoming weak signal problems.

Dual Ethernet WAN SPI-based router. Inexpensive alternative to Symantec VPN 200, but without dialup/ISDN backup ports, and less sophisticated load balancing and failover.
