Products are tested either using the Azimuth method (older products) or the Open Air method (newer products).

When looking for products, start with the 2.4 GHz Up or Downlink Benchmarks to see both 802.11b/g and draft 802.11n products. The 40 MHz B/W benchmarks apply only to draft 802.11n products.

This chart shows the average throughput of 802.11 wireless devices for the frequency band, direction and mode described in the chart title.

The average is calculated from throughput measurements taken in 3 dB steps over a path loss range from 55 dB to the point where AP and STA lose connection.

  • Blue bars represent results using this test procedure.
  • Green bars use the same test procedure, but STA connection is via a Near Field Antenna.
  • Mousing over a bar will show the date that the test was run.
  • Clicking on the product description will take you to the related review.

A basic introduction to the Wireless Charts can be found here.

Basic information on wireless LAN products can be found here.

An explanation of how to relate path loss to actual distance can be found here.
