PCTEL Receives Critical Roaming Patent Print E-mail

November 15, 2006

PCTEL announced today that its fundamental patent covering roaming across different types of wireless networks has been granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

PCTEL had previously announced that the USPTO had communicated its intention to grant the patent. Official notification was provided on November 7, 2006.

The patent (U.S. 7,133,669) is entitled, "Systems and Methods for Seamless Roaming Between Wireless Networks". It is briefly described as a technique for the seamless switching of a wireless device between wireless wide area networks (WWANs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs) that includes automatically detecting the available WWANs and WLANs, selecting one of the available networks for use by the wireless device and connecting the wireless device to the selected network.

PCTELs Roaming Client permits wireless subscribers to roam from cellular to Wi-Fi networks while maintaining data and voice calls. PCTEL was the first company to market a multi-mode Roaming Client that enabled this functionality.

Marty Singer, PCTELs Chairman and CEO said While we are committed to protecting our technology and inventions, we also have a history of making our technology available to the industry.
