Focus Enhancements today announced it has received FCC approval for its Ultra Wideband (UWB) DS-OFDM modulation scheme. The approval was granted without the waiver restrictions that are currently being applied to the WiMedia Standard UWB technology. DS-OFDM UWB radios will be able to use all or any part of the 3.1 to 10.6 GHz spectrum allocated by the FCC. Focus said "UWB rates and distances will be significantly increased using DS-OFDM architecture". Focus Talaria UWB wireless technology supports both WiMedia Standard MB-OFDM modulation and Focus' DS-OFDM modulation and can communicate with both WiMedia and DS-OFDM devices simultaneously. Talaria is also designed to be compatible with the Certified Wireless USB Standard. The Talaria UWB technology analog chip operates between 3.2 gigahertz (GHz) and 7.4 GHz. Selectable rate settings include 110, 440, 660 and 880 Mbps. The digital chip uses 0.13 micron CMOS process technology.
