Atheros today announced that it is sampling a low-cost six port 10/100 Ethernet switch chip to key customers. The company said the AR8216 will allow it to provide networking customers with "all of the major silicon required for complete wire-to-wireless router solutions". Atheros chose to produce a 10/100 switch instead of a gigabit Ethernet version because it believes that is where the volume will be in the near term. The AR8216 six-port configuration consists of five 10/100 Ethernet PHY ports, one MII port for CPU connectivity and six independent Media Access Controllers (MACs). The chip comes in a 10mm x 10mm, 80-pin, low-profile quad flat package that Atheros says is one-third the size of competing solutions. Features include non-blocking switching, ingress policing and egress rate limiting, IPv4 IGMP and IPv6 MLD snooping and VLAN support.
