Atheros today announced what it claims is the first single-board, dual-radio router platform featuring single-chip 802.11n technology.

The XSPAN AR9002AP, which is being demoed at COMPUTEX in Taipei, Taiwan this week, includes the AR9220 and AR9223 11n single-chip radio/MAC/BB designs supporting 5 and 2.4 GHz bands, respectively, AR7161 680MHz wireless networking CPU and AR8216 Fast Ethernet or AR8316 Gigabit Ethernet switch options. Concurrent operation in each band is supported at 300 Mbps PHY (raw) data rates.

The system has been integrated on a single circuit board that requires "up to 50 percent fewer components than competitive solutions".

The new platform is the first to offer Atheros' new iQUE QoS technology that manages and prioritizes network traffic between WAN and LAN and on the WLAN to optimize the utilization of network capacity.

On the WAN, Atheros iQUE technology employs classification and prioritization algorithms, which analyze transmitted or received packets to optimize content flow.. On the WLAN, the AR9002AP utilizes several "advanced" QoS techniques including video transmission control algorithms and multicast-to-unicast translation.

Other platform features include support for 802.11e, WMM and WMM PowerSave and Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS).

The AR9002AP platform is currently sampling to "key customers". Pricing was not announced.
