The DS408 is positioned as a four-drive version of Synology's recently-introduced five-bay DS508. Like the DS508, it is powered by an 800 MHz CPU with 512 MB of memory and supports RAID 0, 1 and 5 volumes with on-line RAID expansion. Synology said that the new NAS "reaches the goal of 55+ MB/sec in RAID 5 reading and 33+ MB/sec in RAID 5 writing", while using "approximately 40W" with four drives installed. Other features include support for recording directly from more than 65 IP cameras, complete LAMP webserver, UPnP AV media and iTunes servers and Active Directory support. The DS408 will be available in the U.S. next month at an MSRP of $749.
