WPA Exploit Not All It's Cracked Up To Be

Glenn Fleishman over at Wi-Fi Net News had a chat with Eric Tews, one of the researchers reported to have come up with a crack for WPA's TKIP encryption. Glenn has posted a good summary of what he found has really been discovered.

The short story is that if you are using WPA/TKIP, you have little to fear from this exploit. You are more at risk from using a weak passphrase, whether you are running WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES.

Snort vulnerability found

On Monday, Sourcefire — the company behind the open-source intrusion-detection application Snort — said that hackers could potentially execute malicious code on a system running Snort and gain access to confidential data.

The vulnerability was reported to Sourcefire by Internet Security Systems (ISS), the security arm of IBM.

Authentication technology developer CRYPTOCard yesterday announced the introduction of its CRYPTO-MAS Managed Authentication Service.

CRYPTO-MAS is a Managed Authentication Service that protects companies and their employees against shoulder surfing, social engineering, and other forms of password theft by using token-based two-factor authentication in combination with a Personal Identification Numbers (PINs). The service uses CRYPTOCard’s authentication technology, which is deployed by "major organizations" in over 70 countries.

Streamlined Hotspot Logins for Portable Devices

Devicescape launches new service, software, to reduce friction: The company opened its public beta to enable portable Wi-Fi-equipped devices to attach themselves to hotspots without the tedium--when it's even possible--of logging in.

Devicescape, until now, has been known as an embedded Wi-Fi driver developer, making network software that runs on devices that have very little space and very little battery power to carry out that task. They're leveraging their knowledge and experience in launching this new service.
