Droidfi logoUpdate - Droidfi thinks your router should run on Android.

Boston-based Droidfi recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to port firmware to consumer wireless routers.

The first efforts are focused on draft 802.11ac routers based on Broadcom chipsets, which include the Linksys EA6500, NETGEAR R6300 and ASUS RT-AC66U.

Droidfi plans to give the firmware away and make money by selling apps to expand features of Drodfi routers. Most notable among the upgrades planned for Android add-on apps are mesh networking, connection to cloud storage services and anti-virus.

The project has set a modest goal of only $2,500, which looks like it will be reached soon has already been reached. Pledge levels are $1, $5, $20, $50, $250, $500 and $1000. That $250 pledge will get you a router, USB/serial cable and direct access to the development team.

We have to give these guys credit for taking a path that Cisco, NETGEAR and D-Link have chosen not to go down with their own efforts in smartening up routers. But whether Drodfi succeeds, first depends on your support. View the video pitch above or head right over to Kickstarter to pledge.
