Skype and Intel today announced a joint promotion to promote Internet calling. Consumers in the U.S. and Canada will be able to place free SkypeOut calls to any landline or mobile number around the world on Mother's Day (May 13, 2007).
Intel said it is sponsoring the "Gift of Gab" promotion as a way to demonstrate how audio and video calling are optimized when using PCs powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The company said Skype conference calls are now clearer and users PCs more responsive during calls due to collaborative efforts between Intel and Skype engineers.

Intel today officially introduced its draft 802.11n chipset. The company described its Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N network connection, as "an upgrade to the wireless component found inside Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and other Intel-based laptops".
The release contained no hard specs and was even vague on whether the product has dual-band capability (it does). It was noted, however, that the new chipset offers "up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range" and would provide "up to an extra hour of notebook battery life" when compared to existing Draft-N products.
Originally scheduled for Q2 launch, Intel's new Wi-Fi chipset code-named "Kedron" will be unveiled at an event next Tuesday, TG Daily has learned.
Kedron is the wireless component and was intended to be introduced in tandem with the new mobile chipset code-named "Santa Rosa" in Q2 of this year. Kedron will be based on the draft-n wireless standard and promises to increase data transfer bandwidth as well as range of wireless devices.
Intel has announced that it built its first WiMAX baseband chip for laptops. The WiMAX Connect 2300 chip, combined with a radio antenna, could be a long-range replacement for 802.11 Wi-Fi and cellular networks by providing multi-megabit speeds over several kilometers. Intel has also incorporated multiple antennas to increase speed and signal strength.The chip was demonstrated in a prototype Intel Centrino Duo laptop with mobile WiMAX, Wi-Fi and HSDPA. Intel says the chip uses the same software for current WiMAX and Wi-Fi devices which certainly will ease headaches for laptop makers. The company also claims the chip has low power requirements.
