Ch-Ch-Ch Changes

So I’m adding a new site Section, The Basics, to try to better serve networking novices. Some of the content will be existing articles, gathered together for easier access. But I’ll also be creating new material, so if you have an idea for something you’d like us to write about, drop me a note.

The second change involves a new topic: Home Control and Automation. While it might seem that this doesn’t fall under the topic of small networks, if you squint a little, you’ll see that it does. Because today’s home control systems are, indeed, networked systems. They just happen to use different technologies and live on their own, separate network.

But with the introduction of products such as Actiontec’s zControl and Hawking’s Home Remote, those separate worlds are merging. So I’m adding another new site Section, Home Control, that will cover this increasingly popular subject. Since Z-Wave technology is an important part of today’s Home Control world, we’re partnering with ZWaveWorld to help kick-start our coverage.

In order to make room for these new sections up there on the menu bar, I’ve combined the separate Multimedia and VoIP sections into one, appropriately titled: Multimedia & VoIP. Same coverage as before, but now all in one handy place.

I hope these changes will make SmallNetBuilder an even better use of your valuable time. Let me know if they don’t!

Linksys Range Plus is Draft 11n in Disguise

Today's announcement by Linksys of its "affordable" Range Plus product line (WRT100, WPC100) is an odd one. The product line is described as using "MIMO" technology to provide extended coverage at a price point around $100. But a look at the FCC Test report reveals the real technology used.
