Cisco invests in home networked entertainment company

Avega Systems yesterday announced that Cisco Systems, JAFCO Asia and Technology Venture Partners (TVP), have completed a $7M Series B funding deal.

Avega Systems develops networked home entertainment technology platforms and for the past three years has been developing core technologies targeted at the "connected digital home". Avega’s Aios technology platform is targeted at whole-home, multi-zone networked entertainment. The technology incorporates standard wired and wireless technologies including draft 11n and HomePlug AV as well as UPnP AV and DLNA. Aios is being made available to partners on an OEM basis.

D-Link adds wireless management to 10/100 smart switch

D-Link today announced that it will soon add wireless management features to its DES-1228P 24-Port 10/100 smart switch with PoE. The new features will support the upcoming DWL-3140AP, a small, "smoke detector-sized" access point.

Centralized AP management features will include WEP, WPA and WPA2 security, configuration templates, quick discovery of APs, AP mapping utility, full-time AP status controls, AP load balancing and the ability to maintain all AP traffic history and generate reports with statistical diagrams.

Dell, EPA To Host D.C. Earth Day Computer Recycling Drive

Dell and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host an Earth Day computer recycling event for consumers in the Washington metropolitan area on Sunday, April 22. The free event is part of Dell’s commitment to educating consumers about responsible computer recycling options and keeping information technology equipment out of landfills.

Washington, D.C.-area residents can recycle any brand computer, monitor, printer and other computer equipment by dropping off the items at the event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the event site at 13th and E Streets, N.W.

Iomega adds rackmount Terabyte RAID NAS

Iomega today announced a new rack-mount addition to its NAS product line. The new Iomega StorCenter Pro NAS 450r series is based on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 running on a Dual-Core Intel Xeon hardware platform packaged in a 1U rackmount format.

Four hot-swappable 7200-RPM SATA II drives can be configured for RAID 0, 1 or 5 and other hardware features include dual gigabit Ethernet connections, ECC memory, and an Ultra 320 SCSI (VHDC1) connection for high-speed archival backup. 250 and 500 GB drives are supported for a total of 1 or 2 GB of storage.

SMC announces first RAID NASes

SMC today announced the first of its TigerStore SMB NAS Storage Servers. The SMCNAS04 is a BYOD NAS with four SATA drive slots to accommodate up to 3TB of storage. The same chassis is also available as the SMCNAS24 with four 250GB drives.

Both products support RAID 0, 1, 4, and 5, with "future options" for JBOD and BIG. Features include drive hot-swappability, integrated four port gigabit switch and three USB 2.0 ports for drive expansion, printer connection or connection to USB-enabled UPSes.

Atheros announces next-gen 11g SoC

Atheros today announced what it claims is the most "highly-integrated, cost-effective 802.11g solution" for home gateways. The AR2417 is the newest member of the company's seventh-generation AR5007 family and is a low cost, single-chip solution for mini-PCI and cardbus based designs. The device is currently in volume production.
