Synology logo Synology has released a more powerful dual-bay expandable NAS.

The DS713+ replaces the DS712+ as the company’s answer to customers looking to start with a two-bay RAID 1 NAS and have the option of adding five more bays for more storage and higher drive redundancy.

The new NAS is based on a platform of 2.13 GHz dual-core Intel D2701 Atom CPU with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM. The now-discontinued DS712+ ran on a 1.8 GHz Intel D425 with 1 GB of RAM.

Network connection is via dual aggregatable Gigabit Ethernet ports. External drives and printers can be added via two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one eSATA port. The eSATA port also is used to connect a DX513 five-bay expansion cabinet.

2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard and SS drives up to 4 TB can be configured in Synology Hybrid RAID, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 and individual drive volumes. The two drive bays are hot-swappable.

Synology specs the DS713+ at 202 MB/sec reads and 136 MB/sec writes speed with RAID1 "in a Windows environment".

The DS713+ runs Synology’s DiskStation Manager OS that includes Synology’s Cloud Station remote file sync feature, ADS integration, ACL support, iSCSI targets and iTunes and DLNA media servers.

The DS713+ will be shipping shortly with MSRP "under $550", according to Synology.
