Services & Apps

Yahoo! Livestand LogoYahoo! has announced a new personalized news service coming first to tablets, and then to mobile phones.

First we have Rupert Murdoch launching The Daily, a daily newspaper specifically for tablets. The New York Times followed on quickly with their announcement of their Twitter-based news aggregation service, News.Me. And now we have Yahoo! with their idea of a tablet-based news aggregation service.

Yahoo! will be offering users the ability to choose different news services, and display properly formatted items for a tablet. The app will offer video and audio content, location-aware news items, and social media integration.

Sifting through the marketing material, Yahoo! is basically creating their own version of Flipboard (a popular iPad news reader). NYT's offering at least spices things up a bit using Twitter for a semi-random feed. Users will need a Yahoo! account to manage their subscriptions.

Yahoo! is estimating the app to launch in the first half of 2010, but has already started marketing it on the new Livestand website.
