Wireless News

I've been offline for a few days, but will be back to normal next week. In the meantime, it looks like there has been a bit of news in WiFi land.

Seems like the Wi-Fi Alliance has finally decided to give these two aging wireless security standards some help out the door and on their way to obscurity.

Glenn Fleishman did the legwork to confirm with the Alliance that TKIP and WEP will be phased out in new Wi-Fi Certified devices starting in January 2011 through January 2014.

According to Glenn's report, WPA-TKIP support in access points and wireless routers will be the first to go in 2011, then for clients (STAs) in 2012. WEP supports in APs / wireless routers stops in 2013, followed by no more mixed WPA TKIP / AES mode in 2014.

You'd think that something this important would merit a press release, or even a heads up from the Wi-Fi Alliance. But neither was forthcoming.

Good thing there are guys like Glenn around to keep an eye on things! Read the full story over on WNN.
