The HP MediaSmart Server ex485 and ex487 come with 750 GB and 1.5 TB of storage respectively and are powered by an 2.0 GHz Intel 64-bit Celeron processor and 2 GB of 800-MHz DDR2 DRAM. Storage can be expanded to 9 TB total via four USB 2.0 and one eSATA port.

ex485/ex487 media serving features include iTunes (Firefly) and UPnP AV / DLNA (Twonky) servers and web photo publisher. A photo publisher module allows uploading photos to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa Web Albums and Snapfish. A Media Collector feature scans client systems and automatically stores still image, music and video files in the server.

In addition to scheduled backups from Windows clients, the new servers also back up Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) machines running Apple’s Time Machine. Selected server folders can be backed up to external drives or to Amazon’s S3 online backup service ($ subscription required).

MSRP’s are $599 for the 750 GB ex485 and $749 for the 1.5 TB ex487. Pre-orders will be accepted starting Jan. 5, 2009, with shipments to begin in February 2009.
