Mozy has announced that effective March 1st it will be dropping unlimited backup.
Mozy Home has been a mainstay of the cloud backup industry for many years, offering great encryption and unlimited backup at a great price. Unfortunately this will soon not be the case.
Mozy claims that storage needs are changing and growing at the same time. More people are storing photos and videos as smartphones have proliferated higher megapixel, HD video-capable cameras. Faced with growing storage demands, Mozy came to the conclusion it could no longer support unlimited, unthrottled backup.
Mozy goes into the explanation at length on its website and expects the rest of the industry to make similar decisions soon. I find Mozy’s explanation a little dubious however.
Mozy claims it can no longer support unlimited backup, and yet 75% of its userbase falls under the new 50GB storage cap. Why not just increase the unlimited price, and offer a cheaper, capped storage option?
