Synology today announced a high-performance dual-bay NAS.

The DS210+ uses a 1.06 GHz Freescale MPC8533e that is equipped with a 256-bit AES hardware encryption engine and 512 MB of RAM. Both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives can be used and storage expansion and backup is supported via three USB 2.0 ports and one eSATA port.

Synology claims that the new NAS delivers 108 MB/sec read and 58 MB/sec write performance for a Windows file copy of a 5 GB file.

The new NAS runs Synology’s DSM 2.3 OS with features including encrypted volumes, Amazon S3 cloud backup, multimedia streaming, IP camera surveillance and email and web hosting. The new OS also has a new RAID and volume management system dubbed "Synology Hybrid RAID" (SHR), which makes it easier to expand capacity by adding drives to existing RAID volumes or upsizing drives.

The DS210+ is sold both diskless and preconfigured with drives. It is shipping now with the diskless model priced around $480.
