WD logo Western Digital announced a major upgrade for its My Cloud NASes.

WD introduced its new, redesigned My Cloud OS 3 operating system, Software Developer Kit (SDK) and a more powerful dual-drive My Cloud Mirror NAS for the upcoming IFA Show this week in Berlin.

My Cloud OS 3 features new photo and video capabilities available through browser-based access via MyCloud.com and iOS and Android My Cloud Albums apps.

MyCloud.com supports file collaboration, comprehensive access management and photos and video gallery views. My Cloud Albums apps, available for download late September, allow My Cloud OS 3 users to email access links to shared albums.

My Cloud OS 3 also includes a new WD Sync feature that syncs data across multiple PCs and notebooks. It also supports automatic camera-roll backup of photos from smartphones and tablets and a new transfer tool for moving files to My Cloud devices. The OS also includes Chromebook and Chromecast support.

WD My Cloud OS 3 will be available at the end of September as a free download for My Cloud, My Cloud Mirror, My Cloud Expert Series EX2/EX4, My Cloud Expert Series EX2100/EX4100 and My Cloud Business Series DL2100/DL4100. New WD My Cloud mobile apps are available now on the iTunes and Google Play stores.

WD said Plex and Milestone are already using the new SDK. Access to My Cloud Device SDK and My Cloud API will be available to interested developers late September.

In addition to new software upgrades, WD has also introduced the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2. This new version of WD's dual-drive My Cloud Mirror features a more powerful dual-core Marvell Armada processor, 512 MB of RAM and comes with My Cloud OS 3.

In a related announcement, WD also announced that Milestone's Arcus Surveillance software will be available on WD's My Cloud Business NASes, when upgraded to the My Cloud OS 3 operating system later this month. Arcus will roll out to other My Clouds at a future date.

Users will download Arcus via the My Cloud App Store. It comes with two camera licenses on My Cloud Business NASes, with more licenses available for purchase to support a maximum 16 cameras.
