Iomega logoUpdated – Iomega has introduced a more powerful Intel-based twelve-bay rackmount NAS and added McAfee anti-virus protection to many of its business-class NASes.

The StorCenter px12-450r is based on a Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2 processor with 8 GB of DDR RAM in a 2U rackmount package. The twelve bays support a "broad range" of hot-swappable 3.5" SATA and SSD drives.

The new NAS has all the features of its px12-350r predecessor, which include four Gigabit Ethernet ports supporting aggregation, failover, load balancing and VLANs and three USB 2.0 ports support storage expansion and UPS shutdown synchronization. Two PCIe slots can support a possible 10 GbE option and 4 TB drives will be supported when they become available.

The new NAS runs EMC’s LifeLine software that supports multiple JBOD and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 volumes with hot spare, online RAID level migration and volume expansion. The new px12 also supports storage pools, which enable array drives to be grouped together by similar size and data protection mechanism.

Other LifeLine features include Active Directory support, iSCSI block-level access and CIFS/SMB/Rally, NFS, AFP/Bonjour, FTP, TFTP, HTTP, HTTPS, WebDAV, Windows DFS and SNMP network file protocols.

Still more features include Iomega Personal Cloud technology for secure remote access and replication, USB print serving, support for up to 12 UPnP network cameras by Axis and Panasonic, Axis Video Hosting System for local to hosted cloud video storage and management, UPnP / DLNA / iTunes media servers and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise anti-virus (see below).

Backup features include Apple Time Machine support, Iomega copy jobs for backup to/from rsync servers and SMB shares, and Amazon S3 and Mozy cloud backup.

The px12-450r can also run Linux applications created with Iomega’s LifeLine Software Development Kit (SDK) and is VMware vSphere 4.0, Citrix XenServer, and Windows Server 2003/2008/2008 R2 certified.

Shipments start in Q3 with configurations ranging from diskless to 48 TB (depending on 4 TB drive availability) with MSRPs starting at $5,499.99.

In a related announcement, Iomega said McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Linux (VSEL) will be added to all Iomega StorCenter PX series network storage products starting in Q3 of this year. All PX series products will include a 3-year license at no additional charge.

VSEL provides continuous, on-access scanning for virus and malware threats using both signature and heuristic techniques for both active and archived files.
