Synology’s DS216+ DiskStation is a two-bay NAS joining Synology’s "Plus" series aimed at SMB buyers.
With an MSRP of $299, the new NAS is a lower-cost alternative to the recently introduced DS716+. Both are based on Intel "Braswell" Celeron SoCs; the DS716+ using the quad-core N3150 and the DS216+ the dual-core 1.6 GHz N3050.
The DS216+ also has two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 ports vs. the 716+’ three USB 3.0 and one Gigabit Ethernet port vs. two. Athough both have one eSATA port, only the DS716+ supports a storage expansion cabinet.
The lower-powered N3050 SoC still supports hardware encryption and media transcoding, enabling H.264 4K / 1080p on-the-fly transcoding and AES-encrypted volumes. Synology says the DS216+ is capable of over 100 MB/s write and read throughput for large files for both encrypted and unencrypted volumes.

Like all Synology NASes, the DS216+ runs Synology’s DiskStation Manager that includes a wide range of file storage, backup, cloud and media serving and management features.
