NAS News

QNAP logo QNAP has announced two Intel Core i3 based NASes.

The two new models are the TS-879 Pro and TS-1079 Pro, with eight and ten bays in desktop form factors.

Both have hardware platforms based on Intel's Core i3-2120 CPU with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 512 MB flash DOM.

Other hardware features include dual Gigabit Ethernet ports supporting failover and aggregation, optional dual-port 10 Gb / 1 Gb network card, two USB 3.0, four USB 2.0 and two eSATA ports and LCD status display.

QNAP TS-879 Pro callouts

The new NASes can accept hot-swappable 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard drives or SSDs, which can be configured into single Disk, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+Hot Spare, 6, 6+ Hot Spare, 10, 10+Hot Spare volumes. Unlike Thecus' recently-announced rackmount N8900, which is based on the same Intel CPU, the QNAP NASes do not accept SAS drives.

QNAP TS-879 and TS-1079 Pro

These new additions run QNAP's V3.5 OS, with support for Mac OS X Lion, RADIUS server, VMware, Citrix and Windows virtualization, RAID expansion and level migration and much more.

Pricing and availability were not announced, but the diskless TS-879 Pro is available at multiple etailers for $2199 and the diskless TS-1079 Pro for $2599.
