WD logoWD has announced an updated and rebranded home NAS with better remote access.

The WD My Cloud replaces WD's single-bay My Book Live home NAS, with an emphasis on "personal cloud" features.

My Cloud has an entirely new hardware core based on a dual core Cortex A9 processor and Gigabit Ethernet LAN port. My Cloud also has a USB 3.0 port for storage expansion.

A desktop My Cloud app supports drag-and-drop file transfers between the device and MacOS or Windows computers. The app also supports edit and sync of stored documents.

My Cloud iOS and Android apps have been reworked to provide a better remote experience including smarter photo thumbnail generation and easy file transfer between My Cloud and Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive accounts.

Other improvements include a redesigned configuration dashboard, upgrade from Twonky 5 to Twonky 7 DLNA server and bundling of WD Smartware Pro backup software for Windows users. Time Machine backup is supported for MacOS users.

2 TB ($149.99) and 3 TB ($179.99) My Cloud versions are shipping now. The 4 TB version ($249.99) is "expected to be available" next month. WD said two and four-drive My Clouds are in the works. (Prices are U.S. suggested list.)
