Netgear rolls out new wireless and low-cost gigabit switches and NAS line

NETGEAR today announced four new wireless and wired network infrastructure products, new NAS line and a VoIP partnership.

The NETGEAR ProSafe Smart Wireless Switch (WFS709TP) is a wireless controller supporting up to 16 wireless access points and 256 users per switch. Roaming is supported across multiple access points without the need to re-associate and re-authenticate with access points as they move from location to location.

The WFS709TP integrates RF management and planning capabilities including automatic self-configuration of transmit power level, channel, load balancing and interference avoidance. The switch also incorporates enterprise-class security features including RADIUS and AAA Server support.

Actiontec announces HomePlug AV kit

Actiontec Electronics today released the MegaPlug AV 200 Mbps Ethernet Adapter Kit, a next-generation powerline networking solution based on the new HomePlug AV standard.

Each kit comes with two powerline-to-Ethernet adapters that support up to 200 Mbps raw data rate. Up to 16 adapters can be joined into a single network.

The kit is available immediately at www.actiontec.com for $169.99.

Alcatel-Lucent to acquire NetDevices

Alcatel-Lucent today announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately held NetDevices, a developer of services gateway products for enterprise branch networks, based in Sunnyvale, California.

NetDevices delivers an enterprise networking platform known as a Unified Service Gateway, which is designed to reduce the cost and complexity of managing branch office networks. NetDevices was founded in 2003 and has 45 employees located in Sunnyvale and Bangalore, India.

Upon close of the transaction, the NetDevices team and products will be integrated into Alcatel-Lucent's Enterprise Business Group, reporting into Tom Burns, president of Alcatel-Lucent's Enterprise Solutions activities.

The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions, including applicable regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the second quarter of Alcatel-Lucent's fiscal year 2007. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

HomePNA Alliance still growing

The HomePNA Alliance announced today it now has more than 40 member companies collaborating to promote the adoption of the only multimedia home networking standard approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). HomePNA technology enables high-speed, triple-play Internet services over both phone wires and coaxial cables at speeds up to 320 megabits per second.

The newest members are AFL Telecommunication, a fiber optics product manufacturer and VDSL2 RF filter components manufacturer, Askey Computer Corp., a modem and set-top box manufacturer, CyberTAN Technology, Inc., a manufacturer of broadband and wireless networking equipment, and Medium Link System Technology, a multi-tenant unit (MTU) system integrator.

NETGEAR adds lifetime warranty for biz-class products

NETGEAR today announced that its ProSafe line of business class networking solutions now comes standard with a lifetime hardware warranty.

Effective immediately, NETGEAR ProSafe products shipping worldwide after May 1, 2007, will be covered by a new lifetime hardware warranty that provides hardware replacement, including fan and internal power supply failures, for as long as the original customer owns the product. All existing product sold prior to May 1, 2007 will be covered under the previous hardware warranty.

The new warranty applies across the ProSafe product line including NETGEAR's Layer 2 and Layer 3 managed switches, Smart Switches, unmanaged switches, wired and wireless VPN firewalls, VPN gateways, SSL VPN concentrators, and wireless access points.

Belkin enters SMB Network Monitoring Biz

Belkin today announced its entry into the network monitoring market with a product targeting SMB networks.

Belkin's Pulse is a network monitoring system built on Jumpnode Systems’ appliance-enabled software (AeS) service platform that combines a plug-and-play appliance with a hosted software solution.

D-Link adds wireless management to 10/100 smart switch

D-Link today announced that it will soon add wireless management features to its DES-1228P 24-Port 10/100 smart switch with PoE. The new features will support the upcoming DWL-3140AP, a small, "smoke detector-sized" access point.

Centralized AP management features will include WEP, WPA and WPA2 security, configuration templates, quick discovery of APs, AP mapping utility, full-time AP status controls, AP load balancing and the ability to maintain all AP traffic history and generate reports with statistical diagrams.

SMC to ship HomePlug AV adapter

SMC Networks today announced the addition of a HomePlug AV powerline / Ethernet adapter.

The SMC EZ Connect 200Mbps Powerline AV Hybrid Ethernet Adapter (SMCHPAVH-ETH) is compatible with HomePlug AV/1.0 and 1.1, as well as with existing SMC HomePlug Turbo and 14Mbps devices. Up to 16 Powerline devices can be used in the same network.

The adapter will be available in May 2007 at an MSRP of $99.

NETGEAR adds 24-Port smart PoE switch

NETGEAR today announced the ProSafe 24 Port 10/100 Smart Switch with Four Gigabit Ports and 24 PoE Ports (FS728TP).

The new switch features 24 10/100 ports which each support 802.3af PoE with a total power budget of 195 watts. There are also two combination gigabit copper/SFP slots for optional fiber connectivity and two 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet ports. Management methods include a web-based admin interface, NETGEAR's ProSafe Network Management Software or other SNMP-based (SNMP v1, v2 and v3) management software.

Other features include Access Control List (ACL) filtering, 802.1x port authentication, enhanced QoS for prioritization of voice traffic, rate limiting, and IGMP snooping.

The FS728TP is available now at $630 suggested list.

Phoneline Networking now international standard

The HomePNA Alliance today announced that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has standardized the HomePNA 3.1 multimedia home networking specification. The Alliance said that Recommendation G9954 (01/2007) makes HomePNA the only "internationally standardized existing-wire home networking technology".

HomePNA 3.1 enables service providers to offer high-speed, triple-play Internet services over both phone wires and coaxial cables at speeds up to 320 Mbps.
